We hope that you had an enjoyable half-term break and that your child was able to rest and recharge their batteries after what was a long and fun-filled first half-term. The children have now settled into school beautifully and they are well and truly members of our ‘Stoke Family’.
This half term the children will be learning about ‘Celebrations’. We will be exploring Diwali and look forward to looking at the things we celebrate with our families such as Bonfire Night, weddings, birthdays and finally Christmas.
The children have made excellent progress with their phonics. They have worked very hard to develop their blending skills (putting sounds together to read words) and we hope to consolidate these skills over the next few weeks.
We will be working hard to really develop the children’s segmenting skills this half-term. We use segmenting skills when we spell words; we say the word aloud then break it into its sounds in order to write it (e.g. ‘cat c-a-t’). There will also be a focus on handwriting, ensuring that children are holding their pencil correctly and forming each letter in the right way (starting at the right place and moving their pencil in the right direction). There will also be a focus when writing their names. Some of the children are already able to write their names, however we will be working hard to ensure that they are forming all of the letters correctly when doing this.
We will also begin to send home high frequency word and tricky word resources for you to use with your child. High frequency words are commonly found in children’s books, and tricky words are those that we can’t ‘sound out’. We hope to teach the children to recognise this list of words and to be able to read them on sight.
Any extra practice at home of the sounds we have taught, tricky words, handwriting, blending and segmenting skills would be really beneficial to the children’s learning.
We are very proud of the progress the children have made in their maths so far. This half term we will be working on:
- Recognise the numbers 1-10 and beyond.
- Be able to instantly hold up a given number of fingers;
- Understand and be able to say what is one more than and one less than a number up to 10 and beyond.
- Name common 2D shapes
- Be able to continue a simple pattern
- Exploring money
Thank you to everyone for logging onto their child’s tapestry account. It is lovely to hear some of the fantastic things your children are doing at home. You are always welcome to send us any of the exciting moments from home or when your children have been using their learning from school at home. If you have any questions about using Tapestry please do not hesitate to talk with us about it.
Our class assembly is on 15th November at 2:30pm. For our first class assembly we have it in the Reception classroom and the children then show you all of the learning they have been doing at school. As space is limited we ask that only 2 adults per child attend please. In the spring term we will have a class assembly in the hall in front of the whole school.
We are currently improving our outside area at school. You may have already noticed our new sensory plant area in the top garden. We are always looking out for outside resources or people to help with gardening, so if you would like to get involved please let us know. We are always on the lookout for natural items such as large logs for seating, interesting plants, items for construction such guttering, bricks, gravel and paving slabs. So if you have any of these sort of items they would be gratefully received.

- Book bags must be brought to school each day, please check your child’s book bag as this is where we will put any letters or important information.
- Please also ensure your child has their reading book with them every day.
- Please name all clothing and personal possessions.
- Please let somebody know if someone different is picking up your child at the end of the school day.
- Please ensure that your child has a named pair of wellies in school each day.
