Welcome back and Happy New Year! Our topic for this half term is looking at renewable and non-renewable energy, and the effect of fossil fuels on climate change. Attached is a curriculum plan of an overview of the work being covered in this topic. Below are areas of work the children will be learning about.
Maths: mental and written calculations for multiplication and division; properties of triangles and circles; angles and SATs practice
Science: recognising that light appears to travel in straight lines, understanding the idea that light travels in straight lines and understanding that objects are seen because they give out or reflect light into the eye. This is continued from last term.
R.E: Exploring what it means to be British. How are values shared? How do different religions overlap?
English: writing an explanation; guided reading; spelling strategies; grammar, punctuation; reading comprehension and SATs practice.
It is very important that your child continues to read regularly at home, either by themselves or to an adult. Reading is a key home learning activity that helps with: understanding the world around them, understanding vocabulary, spellings, ideas for their writing, punctuation and grammar. Ideally, we would like your child to read five times a week. Reading matter could include novels, comics, newspapers, annuals, recipes and non-fiction books. They do not need to read pages and pages if they don’t want to, but little and often would be great. The children need to record in their reading records if they have read at home. It would be great if, on occasions, an adult could listen to them read and record this in their reading records too. Asking questions about the plot, characters, setting, vocabulary etc. would really help with their understanding of the text. There will be regular monitoring of reading books to make sure your child has an appropriate book for their ability and understands what they are reading.
Number facts and maths targets
Knowing number facts helps considerably with their understanding in calculation strategies. In school, your child will be given time (in addition to maths lessons) to practise times tables and related division facts. If your child know their times tables and the related division facts, then they will then have other maths targets to work on based on the year 6 curriculum. If you wish to work with your child on these facts/targets, they are printed in the front of their maths books. We are finding that not knowing these facts can hinder their progress and, therefore, effect their success in their maths SATs papers.
As well as helping your child with their number facts, any ‘real life’ experience would really help with understanding worded problems. These two step problems can often prove tricky to children as they are based on real life problems the children have not faced. Cooking and shopping are particularly valuable examples of real-life experiences.
SATs Practice homework
This term, the children will be given either reading comprehension, grammar/punctuation or maths homework as practise for the upcoming Statutory Assessment tests in May (SATs). These tests do not require particular extra revision at home, but this homework gives the children more experience answering these test type questions and can help consolidate their learning in school. They will be given one piece of homework on a Monday to hand in on Friday, and then another on Friday to hand in on Monday.
Our P.E days this term are Tuesday and Thursday. Please ensure that your child has appropriate kit in school on those days.
