Dear Year 5 Parents and Guardians,

Welcome back after a long and, hopefully, restful Easter break. We find ourselves in the home stretch of the year now, with only 12 weeks left in year 5. This term we will are excited to present a project over the next 5 weeks about tourism and the effect it has on Cornwall. We are going to look into the seaside town of Bude, what makes it tick in the summer and survey its business owners and residents for their opinions on tourism. We will also be talking to Cornwall Council, Visit Cornwall and Bude Police Force as part of our project and we look forward to presenting our findings at the end of term. There will hopefully be an informal gathering where you can see the children’s work at the end of term as well.

This term we will be swimming: children will need their kit and towel on a Monday, as well as goggles or anything else they normally swim with. These extras are not essential, but a personal preference. PE will be on Fridays with Mr Bain.

It is coming to the time of year where children having sun cream to apply to themselves (or having it applied in the morning) would be advisable. I would recommend that children can have a labelled bottle in their bags for use as and when they need. Saying that, coats are still advisable, because of the changeable nature of the Great British Summer.

There are also many opportunities to extend your child’s learning out of school. Below is a ‘bingo’ grid that the children can complete for some extra in-class money. The response to this has been wonderful, with some children coming up with all sorts of work that even ticks more than one box at a time!

As the grid suggests, please look around at travel agents, or travel websites to look at the things that are advertised and thinking about what tourism is, who is targeted and why. The idea of our topic is to really identify what makes Cornwall so special and why so many eager people flock to our towns and beaches and the pros and cons of this industry.

If at any point during the term you have any further questions, or anything I can help with, please do not hesitate to contact me or visit the classroom.

Thank you for your continued support,
