Dear Parents,

Welcome to Year 4!

I cannot tell you how delighted I am to teach your children again this year! I can already see the progress they have made in the juniors and I look forward to helping them continue to flourish.

Year 4 is a fabulous year! We have wonderful topics to cover, lots of science to explore and we are planning a residential trip for the summer term. We are also delighted that Mary Breeze will be teaching the class on a Friday and I know she has some great ideas up her sleeve!

This term, we will be becoming historians as we explore Ancient Greece. As the whole school are learning about walls and bridges, we will be investigating the role of walls in the story of the Trojan War. On Thursday 19th September we will be taking a trip to Truro museum. Look out for a letter about this next week. Please see the attached topic plan for more information about the things we will be learning.

Reading

We are very excited to be starting a new reading scheme at school this year which I’m sure you will be hearing lots about! We need to reassess the children’s reading which may take a few days but we will get books home ASAP. I cannot stress enough how important it is that your child continues to read regularly at home, either by themselves or to an adult. Reading helps children with: understanding the world around them, understanding vocabulary, spellings, ideas for their writing, punctuation and grammar. We would like your child to read five times a week – I know it’s tough but be creative and speak to us if you need help! Reading matter could include novels, comics, newspapers, annuals, recipes and non-fiction books. They do not need to read pages and pages if they don’t want to, but little and often would be great. Asking questions about the plot, characters, setting, vocabulary etc. would really help with their understanding of the text. The ‘Golden Box’ is back so that we can reward your children for all their efforts. They need to remember to put their book in the box each time they read and will be rewarded every time they reach 15 reading sessions.  

 

Spellings

In school, the children will be having daily spelling activities based on the spelling rules and words for Year 4. Although they will not be bringing spellings home to learn for a test, I have attached the words the children are expected to learn by the end of Year 4. This allows you and your child, if you wish, to practise these words and their meanings at home, as well as in school. Also, attached to this letter are some strategies to help learn spellings that we hope you find useful.

 

Maths Facts

The government have issued a statutory times table test for Year 4 pupils to be taken in June 2020. It is therefore the expectation that children will be able to recall all their times table and division facts by this time. Knowing times tables helps considerably with the children’s understanding of calculation strategies and will enable them to make good progress in their maths as the move into Years 5 and 6. We will spend a lot of time learning and rehearsing these in school but any additional support you could provide at home would be appreciated.

As well as helping your child with their number facts, any ‘real life’ experience would really aid with understanding worded problems. These two step problems can often prove tricky to children as they are based on real life problems the children have not faced. Cooking and shopping are particularly valuable examples of real-life experiences

Topic work

We want to encourage the children to enjoy learning and develop inquisitive minds. I would love to see any topic related projects that the children carry out at home. Here are some ideas they might like to explore:

  • Make a piece of Ancient Greek armour
  • Design your own mythical creature
  • Be an archaeologist and unearth hidden treasures in your garden.
  • Try or make some Greek food e.g. tzatziki, taramasalata, olives, moussaka, baklava, feta
  • Run a ‘marathon’ anywhere you like. You will need some competitors, ask your family and friends to join in!
  • Look out for democracy in action at home (or dictatorship)
  • Research Greek sporting activities
  • Read a Greek myth
  • Write a Greek play
  • Challenge your family to a ‘Hit the Button’ competition – can you beat your parents?

As I already know you so well, I thought rather than a formal ‘meet the teacher’ meeting, I’d welcome you all to join me and Mary for tea and cake after school on Monday 16th September from 3:15pm- 4:30pm.
