Dear Parents,

Welcome to Year 4!

I am so pleased to have the opportunity to teach this class again and look forward to working with you this year. I can already see the progress they have made in the juniors and it was lovely to be greeted by such happy, confident children last Wednesday.

As a school we will be investigating walls this term and Year 4 will be trying to answer the question, ‘What can the story of the walls of Troy teach us about life in Ancient Greece?’ Please see the attached topic plan for more information about the things we will be learning. PE lessons will take place on Monday and Friday. Please ensure your children have PE kits in school for these lessons.


It is very important that your child continues to read regularly at home, either by themselves or to an adult. Reading is a key home learning activity that helps with: understanding the world around them, understanding vocabulary, spellings, ideas for their writing, punctuation and grammar. Ideally, we would like your child to read five times a week. Reading matter could include novels, comics, newspapers, annuals, recipes and non-fiction books. They do not need to read pages and pages if they don’t want to, but little and often would be great. The children need to record in their reading records if they have read at home, alone or with an adult. Adults should continue to listen to them read aloud often and can leave notes in their reading records too. Asking questions about the plot, characters, setting, vocabulary etc. would really help with their understanding of the text. There will be regular monitoring of reading books to make sure your child has an appropriate book for their ability and understands what they are reading.



In school, the children will be having daily spelling activities based on the spelling rules and words for Year 4. Although they will not be bringing spellings home to learn for a test, I have attached the words the children are expected to learn by the end of Year 4. This allows you and your child, if you wish, to practise these words and their meanings at home, as well as in school. Also, attached to this letter are some strategies to help learn spellings that we hope you find useful.


Maths Facts

The government are planning to issue a statutory times table test for the next academic year. It is therefore the expectation that children will be able to recall all their times table and division facts by the end of Year 4. Knowing times tables helps considerably with the children’s understanding of calculation strategies and will enable them to make good progress in their maths as the move into Years 5 and 6. We will spend a lot of time learning and rehearsing these in school but any additional support you could provide at home would be appreciated.

As well as helping your child with their number facts, any ‘real life’ experience would really aid with understanding worded problems. These two step problems can often prove tricky to children as they are based on real life problems the children have not faced. Cooking and shopping are particularly valuable examples of real-life experiences

Topic work

We want to encourage the children to enjoy learning and develop inquisitive minds. I would love to see any topic related projects that the children carry out at home. Here are some ideas they might like to explore:

  • Make a piece of Ancient Greek armour
  • Design your own mythical creature
  • Read a Greek myth
  • Write a Greek play
  • Research Greek sporting activities
