Dear Parents,

 

Welcome back to a new term. I hope you all had a fantastic Christmas and a peaceful New Year!

 

This term our topic will be a history based unit which looks at the Stone Age way of life in Britain. The children will be learning about Neolithic housing, food, clothing and weapons, as well as studying the important British Stone Age landmarks of Skara Brae and Stonehenge. Towards the end of the unit, I would very much like to provide the children with a Stone Age field trip. I am currently researching the practicality/cost of this trip and once this process has been completed, I will share more details with you.

 

Please note that our curriculum PE will continue to take place on Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons during this half term. Please ensure that children always have the correct kit and footwear on these days. Tuesday’s session will be a Stone Age dance unit led by Sarah Fairhall, an external dance instructor with a wealth of experience working in schools. Thursday’s will be a gymnastics lesson led by Mr Bain, whom I’m sure you’ll join me in welcoming back with open arms!

 

Homework this term will continue to focus around daily reading and maths number facts/times tables. You may have noticed that we have moved away from testing the children on their laminated maths target cards that were given out at the beginning of Year 3. Instead of this, the pupils are regularly practising their number facts on the Hit the Button app and their scores are being logged, displayed and monitored. We have observed that the children are far more engaged with this method and that they are always motivated to improve their personal bests.

 

This term we will also be continuing to focus on reading independently and on comprehension skills. It is extremely important that when your child reads a book independently, they gain a full understanding of the text, enabling them to answer questions using evidence from the text. These are skills we will be working on during guided reading sessions and during independent reading time. It is often ignoring the punctuation which causes the loss of meaning, so when you hear your child read please ensure that they use the punctuation correctly to help them make sense of the text.
