We have made it to the final half term of the year and we welcome Ms Hernandez to our Year 1 team.
As you can see from the topic web overleaf this half term has an art focus. We will be exploring colour and how it makes us feel as well as looking at the work of some famous artists. We will also consider how music can affect our mood and become familiar with Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue.
As mentioned before half term, the year 1 phonics screening check will take place next week. This is a statutory assessment designed to check whether children have reached the expected level in using phonics to read words. The test entails each child working one-to-one with their teacher for around ten minutes, reading individual words including nonsense words. The children have been used to me working with them in this way over the year and should not find the test stressful. We will let you know whether your child has reached the expected standard in their annual report.
As we are sure you are aware by now there is a great emphasis on reading in year 1. It is essential that the children become as confident and proficient as possible in reading in order to prepare them for year 2. There is no substitute for daily reading at home. We recognise that we all have very busy lives but 10 minutes a day will make an enormous difference so please prioritise a daily read with your child.
PE kit and clothing
Most PE will be outdoor this term so please ensure your child has named PE kit including plimsolls or trainers that fit them.
