Year 4 Home Learning Page

Dear parents,

As you have been informed, the school will be closed from Friday 20th of March following government guidance. Over the course of the closure, I will post learning resources on the school website under the tab ‘Home Learning’ as well as an overview of the Year 4 curriculum so that you can get a flavour of the work that we have been doing at school. I have also provided a simple learning pack to help you get started next week. We understand that your family’s health and wellbeing is the most important thing during this time and we are well aware of the challenges of home-schooling. Children wouldn’t be children without a little reluctance to work and I cannot stress enough the importance of enjoying family time. My main aim is to make learning fun, fast paced and interactive so that the children don’t feel too isolated and neither do you! Feel free to e-mail me with any questions, queries or concerns at:

sally@stoke-climsland.cornwall.sch.uk

I would also love to see photographs of the fun you have at home so that we can celebrate the children’s successes together. I have said to the children that, with your permission, I will also be able to post their pictures on the website as a source of inspiration. In terms of teaching and learning, no question is ‘too silly’ as I am the first to admit that I had no idea what a ‘fronted adverbial’ was until I trained to be a teacher! Schooling has changed so much since we were there so please do e-mail me for support.

I think it is also important to recognise that learning can take place in many forms. Maths and English have their place in the curriculum but there are so many exciting and meaningful learning opportunities that you can create through play. Playing simple games teaches children so much about social etiquette and provides children with an opportunity to practise language skills. Lego models inspire young engineers. Experimenting with different materials develops scientific understanding and watching television teaches children about the world. This is a fantastic opportunity to inspire a love of learning and a passion for reading for pleasure and information. The internet is the world’s best book and it is amazing how much reading takes place when children surf the internet. When we research topics at school, I always ask the children to type in the words ‘for kids’ or ‘for children’ so that they get information that is relevant to them.
